With the ageing of the population and shift in government policy focus, demand is developing for gerontology specialists (aged care). Growth in the volume of physiotherapy services provided will be underpinned by the ageing of the population (and the resultant increase in the average number of services per capita). Hospital work is more readily available for practitioners with specialist qualifications or special interests in such fields such as cardiopulmonary (pertaining to heart/lung function) or neurology (pertaining to the function of the nervous system). The growing professionalism in sports participation has contributed to growth in demand for sports physiotherapy. Sports therapy is proving to be a particularly lucrative area of specialisation. The life cycle stage of the profession is growth underpinned by the ageing of the population and, as a result, the industry is growing at a faster rate to that of the overall economy. Annual real growth in industry value added over the five years to 2006-07 was stronger than real growth in the general economy. There is potential for greater participation in the Medicare system, and some physiotherapists are beginning to form groups in order to maximise marketing strength and to gain access to large clients/referral sources (e.g. hospitals). The Enhanced Primary Care Program has extended Medicare's coverage of allied health services, including physiotherapy. The APA has recommended that, when such effectiveness is proven, new Medicare Benefits Schedule items be introduced for the management of specified conditions by specified practitioners (including physiotherapists). While there is no significant development in technology, the industry has produced research to show the benefits of physiotherapy in treating a widening range of conditions.
