Sandra Brauer

Sandra Brauer PhD, BPhty(Hons)


Sandra is an Associate Professor in the Division of Physiotherapy at The University of Queensland. Her research interests encompass: neuromuscular contributors to balance and gait dysfunction, the role of attention in postural control, motor relearning following neurological injury, development of clinical tools for the assessment of balance dysfunction, and the effect of physical intervention on balance and postural control. Results of this work have been published in leading journals such as Spine, Journals of Gerontology, Gait and Posture, Clinical Rehabilitation and Australian Journal of Physiotherapy. Sandra has presented more than 60 papers at national and international conferences addressing sensorimotor issues, and has also delivered invited papers and workshops.

Sandra is Clinical Guidelines Co-ordinator for Journal of Physiotherapy.

Mark Elkins

Mark Elkins PhD, MHSc, BA, BPhty


Mark is a Research Physiotherapist in the Respiratory Investigation Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. His doctoral research investigated pharmacological and physical therapies to enhance mucociliary clearance in people with cystic fibrosis. Other research interests include clinical trials of physical interventions to improve the efficacy of inhaled medications, and systematic reviews of physical interventions for patients with respiratory disease. He is co-author of chapters in four international text books and has published or co-published scientific papers in journals including New England Journal of Medicine, European Respiratory Journal, Physical Therapy, and Australian Journal of Physiotherapy. Since 2002 he has been a co-Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy at The University of Sydney which maintains the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro).

Terry Haines

Terry Haines PhD, Grad Cert Health Ec, BPhty


Terry is the Director of the Allied Health Clinical Research Unit, Southern Health, and Director of Research, Southern Physiotherapy Clinical-School, Monash University.  He is also an honorary Associate Professor with the University of Queensland and has received research support from several sources including the NHMRC and ARC. Much of Dr Haines's work to date has focused upon the prevention of falls amogst older adults, though he publishes in a range of other areas including health services evaluation, oncology, community rehabilitation, primary care, and research methodologies.  He has used numerous research designs in his work including randomised trials, economic evaluations, prospective cohort studies, systematic reviews, screening tool evaluations and qualitative investigations, while also publishing an original statistical analysis paper.

Terry assists with stastical advice and with the development of papers.

Lisa Harvey

Lisa Harvey PhD, MAppSc (Physiotherapy), GradDipAppSci (ExSpSci), BAppSc (Physiotherapy)


Lisa is an Associate Professor, Rehabilitation Studies Unit, in the Sydney School of Medicine at The University of Sydney. She is both a clinician and a researcher with over 25 years experience in the area of spinal cord injuries. She is primarily interested in clinical trials designed to determine the effectiveness of different physiotherapy interventions for people with spinal cord injury. She teaches widely both nationally and internationally, and has received numerous grants and scholarships. She initiated and continues to manage a website of physiotherapy exercises appropriate for people with neurological conditions (www.physiotherapyexercises.com). Lisa is the author of a widely acclaimed textbook on physiotherapy management of people with spinal cord injuries, and has 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals. She is on the editorial board of Spinal Cord and Journal of Neurological Physical Therapy.

Lisa has an oversight technical role as the journal refines its internet presence.

Rob Herbert

Rob Herbert PhD, BAppSc (Physiother), MAppSc(ExSpSc)


Rob is a Professor in the Sydney Medical School at The University of Sydney, NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the George Institute for Global Health, and Honorary Research Fellow at Neuroscience Research Australia. His research investigates the effectiveness of physiotherapy interventions. He also has a long-standing research interest in the passive mechanical properties of human muscles and tendons. His research has been published in leading journals such as the BMJ, Journal of Physiology and Journal of Biomechanics.

Rob is a past Scientific Editor of Australian Journal of Physiotherapy. He is also a Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy which produces the PEDro database.

Julia Hush

Julia Hush PhD, GradCertEdStud (Higher Ed), BAppSc(Physiotherapy), BSc(Hons)


Julia is a Lecturer in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and Faculty member of the Back Pain Research Group, in the Faculty of Health Sciences, at The University of Sydney where her primary teaching responsibilities are in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and evidence-based practice. Her research interests include: primary and secondary management of back pain, mechanisms underlying the transition of acute to chronic pain, functional neuroimaging and pain, and back pain outcomes research. Julia has been invited to present papers and workshops both nationally and internationally. She has published scientific papers in journals such as Arthritis & Rheumatism–Arthritis Care & Research, European Spine Journal, Spine, and BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. She is an editorial consultant to a number of leading journals including Clinical Journal of Pain, Reviews in Pain, BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, European Journal of Pain, Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, Physical Therapy, Physiotherapy, The Journal of Physiotherapy, and Physiotherapy Theory and Practice. Julia reviews grants for the NHMRC, Physiotherapy Research Foundation, and the Motor Accidents Authority NSW.

Michele Sterling

Michele Sterling PhD, MPhty, PostGradDip(Manips), BPhty


Michele is an Associate Professor in the Division of Physiotherapy at The University of Queensland. She is Associate Director, Centre for National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation Medicine (CONROD) at The University of Queensland. She has lectured widely and has many publications in the area of neck pain and whiplash. Her research interests include the characterisation of whiplash in terms of motor dysfunction, sensory disturbances and psychological factors; the investigation of prognostic indicators for recovery and non-recovery from whiplash injury; investigation of sensory changes following whiplash injury, investigation of the differences in pain processing mechanisms between traumatic and idiopathic neck pain, and the development of research based interventions for the management of whiplash and idiopathic neck pain. Michele is a reviewer for a range of internationally respected journals including Manual Therapy, Spine, European Journal of Pain, and Archives of Medical Research. Her memberships include: International Association for the Study of Pain, Australian Pain Society, and Australian Society for Medical Research.

Nick Taylor

Nicholas Taylor PhD, BAppSci(physio), BSc


Nick is Professor of Physiotherapy, Eastern Health and La Trobe University having been appointed to this joint position in November 2006. As well as leading Allied Health research at Eastern Health, Nick is also Professor of Physiotherapy in the Musculoskeletal Research Centre and School of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University. He began his professional career as a new graduate physiotherapist at Box Hill Hospital in the 1980s. After working in Canada, he returned to commence his academic career at La Trobe University. He has gained a reputation for his research on exercise for people with chronic disease and injury and has made 17 presentations at national and international conferences over the past three years. Nick has published extensively and acted as a reviewer for major physiotherapy-related journals, grants bodies, and abstracts submitted for WCPT 2007.
