National Neurology Group (NNG)

Membership of the National Neurology Group (NNG) is open to all APA members with an interest in physiotherapy-related management of people with neurological conditions. This includes conditions such as stroke, acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and motor neurone disease.

Membership benefits include access to targeted professional development for neurological physiotherapists at discounted rates, the NNG members' newsletter, access to the NNG website community, and access to peer networks and support for physiotherapists working in the area of neurology. A key part of NNG membership is access to professional development in the area of neurological physiotherapy. The NNG runs a large number of courses specifically designed to target the needs of our members. A Nationally Accredited Level One Course for newly qualified therapists or therapists returning to work in the field of Neurological Physiotherapy is run Australia wide. Examples of other courses include vestibular courses, cardiovascular training for stroke, Managing the Neurological Upper Limb, and Assessment and treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. The group also holds a National conference biannually to showcase Australian research and developments in Neurological Physiotherapy, and to provide professional development and networking opportunities for its members, with discounted registration for NNG members.

The National Neurology Group encourages research in the field of neurological physiotherapy through Physiotherapy Research Foundation grants, and also offers a publication incentive to provide funding to support clinicians who undertake research. The National Neurology group actively supports rural and remote members through bursaries to assist these members with travel costs associated with professional development courses and conferences. The cost of NNG conferences and courses is at NNG member rates for all Rural and Remote APA members.

As the leading body of physiotherapists specialising in the physiotherapy assessment and treatment of neurological conditions in Australia, the National Neurology Group has a key role in consultation and advocacy for both physiotherapists working in this specialist area and clients with a neurological condition. The NNG is regularly consulted by other organisations in the preparation of documents including clinical guidelines and has an important role in lobbying governments to raise issues of concern to people with neurological conditions
