The AMA’s annual Indigenous Health Report Card released yesterday highlights the ongoing challenges in service provision and health outcomes for Indigenous people. The APA commends the AMA’s long term commitment to and advocacy for better Indigenous health.
“Chronic disease remains tragically over represented in Indigenous communities,” said APA President Pat Maher. “Physiotherapists have an essential role in reducing the impact of chronic diseases, especially obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.’
“The Federal Government needs to urgently resource physiotherapists to work with Indigenous people, particularly in rural and remote areas, to assist in reducing the crushing burden of disease they currently face.”
Physiotherapy services to Indigenous people need to be radically expanded and improved in the areas of rehabilitation, functional maintenance of people with disabilities and in the management of the frail aged. Physiotherapists also improve future health outcomes through health promotion and injury prevention activities.
“Independence is vital to Indigenous people as is the capacity to remain in their communities despite injury, chronic disease or ageing. Greater access to culturally appropriate physiotherapy would support the AMA and the Federal Government’s policies to improve health and maintain independence.”
